What Color is Your Skin?

I needed to buy some more make-up today, so I went to the drugstore. I had written down the type and color of the makeup I currently use, hoping to make it a quick in-and-out process. Go in, find the makeup on the shelf that's the same as what I've been using, and get out.

Alas, it was not this easy. The kind I normally use was out of stock, but there was a slightly different type - similar color - in stock. This led to a good 20 minutes of comparing different types of the same brand (comparing Cover Girl's "Trublend" to its "Outlast" line), and realizing that:
a) I'm not sure what the right color I should be wearing, and
b) Cover Girl evidently can't decide what color I should be wearing either.

Am I "Translucent Light"? "Translucent Normal"? "Creamy Ivory"? "Light Beige?" "Creamy Natural"? To complicate matters even more, the "Trublend Creamy Ivory" looks different from the "Outlast Creamy Ivory", even though they are both made by Cover Girl. As if it's not hard enough to figure out if I want the "Trublend" line vs. the "Outlast" line, now the colors in those lines are different - even though they have the same names. Arrgh!

And how can I really tell what the right color is for my skin? Oftentimes there are two or three that seem like they could work. And the fluorescent lights in the drugstore, under which I'm making this decision, don't really help either.

And this is just one brand! I think I would get totally overwhelmed if I also ventured down the other brands, to try and find the right shade. Shopping for make-up is just about as bad as shopping for jeans. It's tough being a girl.

I always felt the same way about not knowing what color to pick so I kept buying this expensive Clinique foundation because the make up girl told me which color and type to buy. Anyway, my practical side (that doesn't like spending $30 on foundation) got the better of me and I finally braved the neutrogena make up section at Target. My new trick, that seems to work great, is to open up the colors that seem right and blend them into the back of my hand near my thumb. If I can see it, the color is no good, if I can't see it I've got the right shade. As far as "trublend" vs. "outlast" I have no idea, I chose neutrogena because I trust its non-comedegenic properties and then just randomly chose a line of foundation. But you're right Amanda...being a girl can be very lame. (and I'm glad to see no lame friends with perfect and flawless skin have suggested just not wearing make up!)

Since I am always shopping with Isaac and Kaylee I just grab whatever looks good and move on--pretty lame I know.

You know who to call if you'd like to try it before you buy it- your friendly Avon representative :)
