There's a show on Animal Planet called "Animal Cops". It follows police officers or ASPCA officers in different cities as they investigate cases of animal cruelty, and tells the stories of what happens to the animals (some are happy endings, but many are not). Every time I watch this show I first get so angry at how irresponsible people are, and then I burst into tears and want to adopt all the animals I see (maybe not all of them, but at least one or two.) Alas, pets are not allowed in the apartment I'm in. The show is too emotionally draining...I can't watch it anymore.
On the plus side, I remind myself that I have saved a cat from a life on the streets, and he now lives a pampered life with my parents. And I'm able to enjoying cuddling with the Piggott's little Zumaya, who they rescued from the shelter and have given a "fur-ever" home. Someday I'll have a cat again...just not now.

You are right, your/our Gilbert is pampered. He likes to have his people take care of him.
You are a sensative soul. I still can't watch movies where animals are implied to be injured or killed (especially horses). I couldn't watch Animal Cops - it is REAL!
