Thoughts About God

I'm slowly working my way through this great book Amy has called "Systematic Theology" by Wayne Grudem. It's great, deep stuff about God, but written in a way that is accessible and understandable by the everyday theologian. The past couple of days I've been reading about the incommunicable attributes of God - those attributes that are unique to Him and Him alone, like His independence, unchangeableness, eternalness, omnipresence, and unity (to name a few). Throughout the day I try to keep in mind what I've read about God that morning (admittedly, some days are better than others).

Two days ago I was driving home from work and this song by Matthew West came on the radio. The lyrics really hit me - the song is sung as though it is God saying these things to a person, and it speaks about how He knows me and sees me and loves me. I love the chorus the best:

"I love you more than the sun
And the stars that I taught how to shine
You are mine, and you shine for me too
I love you yesterday and today
And tomorrow, I'll say it again and againI
love you more"
So in the midst of my thoughts about all these incommunicable attributes of God - thinking about how incredible these attributes are, and how it makes me feel insignificant in comparison, God gives me this well-timed reminder that, in addition to His independence and eternalness and all that, He sees little ol' me and He loves me more than anything else in His creation. How awesome is that? Pretty awesome.
You can listen to this song for youself my visiting my MySpace site here. (I don't really do MySpace - I just joined so I could comment on other people's sites).
The full lyrics to the song are here:
Take a look at the mountains
Stretching a mile high
Take a look at the ocean
Far as your eye can see
And think of Me
Take a look at the desert
Do you feel like a grain of sand?
I am with you wherever
Where you go is where I am
And I'm always thinking of you
Take a look around you
I'm spelling it out one by one
(Chorus)
I love you more than the sun
And the stars that I taught how to shine
You are mine, and you shine for me too
I love you yesterday and today
And tomorrow, I'll say it again and again
I love you more
Just a face in the city
Just a tear on a crowded street
But you are one in a million
And you belong to Me
And I want you to know
That I'm not letting go
Even when you come undone
(Chorus)
I love you more than the sun
And the stars that I taught how to shine
You are mine, and you shine for me too
I love you yesterday and today
And tomorrow, I'll say it again and again
I love you more
I love you more
Shine for Me
Shine for Me
Shine on, shine on
Shine for Me
And I see you
And I made you
And I love you more than you can imagine
More than you can fathom
I love you more than the sun
And you shine for me
(Matthew West)
