Just Call Me the Kettle...or the Pot

In my current position at work, I have the "privilege" of reviewing various resumes and cover letters that people submit when we've had job openings. There are some resumes and cover letters I've read that make me just shake my head and wonder whether the person applying even bothered to do spell check or any proof-reading at all before they mailed it in. I mean come on, studies show you have about 3 seconds to make a good first impression with your resume/cover letter, so you better make sure it's error free! And if I know this, certainly my own resume would be flawless, right?

Umm...yeah.

The other day for some reason I was looking over the most current version of my resume and noticed - with HORROR - that I had indicated I graduated from Wayne State University in 2005 with a "Mater of Social Work". Mater! Now all I need is my sidekick, Lighting McQueen.

Fortunately, I don't think this version of my resume was ever used for anything important (I think I had needed a resume for a grant application I was working on or something). Regardless, I felt like a huge hypocrite for having criticized people for having spelling errors in their resumes/cover letters, when I myself was no better. I suppose we all need a good humbling now and then.
