A New Command

I've been going to Maundy Thursday services for just about my entire life, but until yesterday wouldn't have been able to tell you what "maundy" meant. I guess I always assumed it meant something like "sorrowful" or "anguished" (considering Christ's anguish in the garden). But last night my roommate and my pastor both taught me that "maundy" is derived from a Latin word for "command"...so really Maundy Thursday is about celebrating a command that Christ gives his followers before his death and resurrection. And the command is this:

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know you are my disciples, if you love one another".
- John 13:34-35
