Dating Circa 1860

I love this line from "Gone With the Wind" - it's Scarlett O'Hara's thoughts as she observes Melanie interacting with Ashley - and, as we all know, Scarlett is secretly in love with Ashley and tries to steal him away from Melanie. The fact that Melanie is his cousin is another story. What's up with people marrying their cousins? Jane Austin's characters do it all the time too. Anyway.... here's the line:

"Why, she (Melanie) is no more than a bluestocking* and everyone knows what men think of bluestockings...The way to get a man interested and to hold his interest was to talk about him, and then gradually lead the conversation around to yourself - and keep it there."

Great advice!

*bluestocking: a woman having intellectual or literary interests
