2011 Bookshelf: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

I loved this book (by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows). It's definitely one of my favorites that I've read this year so far, and it's a perfect "summer read".

The story is set in 1946 in England, just after WWII. The book is written a series of letters between the various characters of the book. I've never read a book written in that style before, and at first I thought it would be strange or difficult to follow. On the contrary - it was a really fun way to experience the story. I think that's why I enjoyed this book so much - it was such a great story with characters that you just grew attached to. (The book I read prior to this one, "Never Let Me Go", didn't have as great a story, and I never really felt anything for the characters, which is why I think I didn't like it.)

At the heart of this story is an author named Juliet, who travels to Guernsey Island (located in the English Channel) to learn about what life was like for the Islanders there while they were under German occupation. There is plenty of humor in the book, but also a great deal of sadness as part of the story revolves around a woman from the Island who was arrested by the Germans and sent to a concentration camp, and with what happened to her there. As cliche as it sounds, I can truly sad I both laughed and cried at points throughout this book.

All around, two thumbs up!
