Almost two years ago I switched my car insurance from State Farm to AAA, because I found out it was significantly cheaper. There's a reason why so many drivers in the city don't have car insurance - it's crazy expensive. So I was happy to find a new company that offered a much lower rate.
I recently received my 6-month policy, which came with a new, higher premium. A nice lady at AAA explained to me today that due to two claims I had filed last spring (one for when my catalytic converter was stolen, and the other for when a shopping cart smashed into my car), my premium is now $230 more for the 6-month period (works out to $40 a month more).
Apparently when I first signed up for AAA, they scored me on how many claims/violations I had on my record. I had a score of 5 - the highest you could receive - which meant a greater discount. My score on this is now a 1 - meaning a lesser discount and a higher premium. I told AAA this seems like a drastic jump considering the claims I filed (it's not as though my car was stolen or totaled). They didn't really seem to care.
It does sound like if I have no more incidences with my car (and file no more claims), this score - and hence the discount - could increase again. So hopefully punks will steer clear of my car. Until then - or unless I find something cheaper - I'm paying $846 for a 6-month car insurance policy. Ouch.
