I pretty much failed all of last year in keeping track on my blog of the books I read over the year. I'd like to do better at that this year, because for some reason I assume people reading this are interested in what I read. This year I'm going to try to give some thoughts on each book after I finish them, rather than wait until the end of the year and risk forgetting everything. So here goes...
Last weekend I finished listening to the book "The Associate" by John Grisham. I checked out the book on CD from the library, because I had a lot of driving to do over the holidays, and listening to books on CD on long car rides keep me more entertained than just listening to music. I finished up listening to this while cooped up all last weekend and while I worked on the slippers that everyone seems to love so much.
This book was terribly disappointing. I've not read a ton of Grisham, but from what I have read of him I was expecting a thrilling story, with twists and maybe a surprise ending. This book was none of that. The story centers on a young, bright Yale law school grad who is blackmailed into taking a job at a big wallstreet law firm so he can steal secrets on some big government case and feed the information to the person who is blackmailing him. The basic premise of the story had promise, but the story progressed in a way that was just, frankly, dull. And, to make things even more dull and unsatisfiying, the ending leaves you with no closure or real resolution to the problem. I remember thinking more than once as I was listening, "this is kind of boring". So, my advice: don't waste your time on this one.
