Cricket

I had a frustrating encounter with a cricket last night. It was about 11:30, and I was close to falling asleep when I heard what sounded like a cricket. I thought this was odd, because my bedroom windows were closed and my window air-conditioner was on. I thought maybe the air conditioner was making a strange noise. The chirping noise ended, and thought that was it. I was so close to falling asleep when the chirping started again. Very loudly. I realized that it really was a cricket. I looked into the air conditioner, expecting to see creepy antennae poking out, but didn't see anything. The chirping stopped and I hoped that was the end of it.

Alas, only a few minutes later the cricket was at it again! Now, I do enjoy falling asleep to the sound of crickets...as long as it is a quiet chirping in the background. This bugger sounded like he was right next to my head (which, thankfully, he wasn't. I checked). It was awful! As soon as the chirping ended, I would come close to finally falling asleep, but would still be on edge expecting it to start chirping again.

Finally, at about 12:45 (why did I wait so long?), I realized the darned thing was not going to stop, so I stripped the sheets off my bed, put them on the mattress lying on the floor of the spare room, lugged by fan and alarm clock to the spare room and promptly fell asleep. Alas, I was woken a short 5 hours later and had to get up and go to work.

Ugh! I feel your pain. While we were visiting friends at the tail end of our vacation last week, Jason and I slept in the basement. With a cricket. It sounded like it was on my pillow! After a bit of detective work, and some stealthy hiding with the lights out, Jason smashed it with a shoe. But it was not easy--the cricket kept crawling back under the baseboards!

You have my total empathy. It is impossible to sleep with a cricket in the room.
