In the past couple of weeks I've received at least two random phone calls from people looking to get information about homelessness in Detroit by Googling "homelessness" and "Detroit" and coming up with my name and work phone number . On the one hand, that's okay, because that's sort of my job. On the other hand, sometimes it makes me a little nervous about what kind of calls I could be getting in the future. So far I can handle them! One was from a real estate developer in D.C., and the other (this cracked me up) was from a kid in Toronto writing a novel about a family who was homeless. The kid had a bunch of questions about how a homeless family would get help. I asked if this was for a class assignment, and he/she said no - it was just something they were doing. (I couldn't tell if it was a boy or a girl. He/she talked so fast I had to ask him/her to repeat him/herself several times. I never did catch his/her name).
On a side note, I'm a believer that everyone should "Google" themselves every so often, just to see what turns up. Try it - it's fun! (Among other things, I get a link to Andrea's blog when I do my name).
(Extreme irony: I ran spell check over this post before posting it. It caught the word "Google" and suggested I change it to "goggle". Now, Blogger is run by the Google corporation...you'd think they would recognize the name of their own company as a legit word.)
