Just Because

Last night my roommates and I threw a "Good Friday" party at our house. We really just wanted an excuse to buy a bunch of wine and have a lot of friends over and Good Friday provided that excuse. Besides, there was a a special person in town to see one of my roommates and party provided an easy atmosphere for him to come and hang out. (A side note about wine, some of our favorite wine comes from Oliver Winery. I really like their Soft Red and Camelot Mead.)


We were lucky to have a bunch of fresh flowers in our house for the party - tulips, baby iris, and hyacinth. Plus, the daffodils in our front lawn are out in all their glory. This made me wonder, what is the purpose of flowers looking and smelling so nice? Why did God make them so beautiful and enjoyable? He could have not made flowers at all, or just made something ugly. I think flowers point to the pure extravegance of God's love for us. While I'm sure it's true that the color or smell attracts the bees, which pollinate other flowers, etc., God could have designed the bees to be attracted to ugly plants and not made pretty plants at all. But He didn't design it that way. He gave us this beauty for our pure enjoyement. How cool is that?
