(Not So Amazing) Thoughts on "The Amazing Race"

I really like the show "The Amazing Race". It's one of my favorites. This season, however, I'm taking issue with the boyfriend/girlfriend teams - Jill & Thomas, Nick & Vicki, Chad & Stephanie. The way these guys treat their girlfriends (or fiance, as Chad proposed to Stephanie on the show) disturbs me. (Fortunately, Chad & Stephanie are also now out of the race, so I no longer have to watch them).

As long as everything is going well for them, and they are accomplishing their tasks/challenges quickly, the guys are encouraging and supportive of their girls. But when they start to fall behind, or make mistakes, or get stuck on something, then the guys get frustrated, and start being demeaning to their girls - calling them "stupid", saying things like "I can't believe you did that", etc. Even if the guys do apologize the next day, the minute things look bad for them, they start being all stupid again.

I understand that these are all probably really competitive people, and that they are trying to win $1 million, and that this is not really "real life". But if you're with this person - and even considering marrying them - I say to these girls: "Hello! Red flag!" Even if this guy is all nicey-nice when things are going well, how do you think he's going to treat you when your relationship or marriage gets hard? Do you really want to be with a guy who calls you "stupid" when you make a mistake?

I want to slap some sense into these girls...and tell them to lose the loser and find themselves someone better, because they deserve better.

I'm rooting for Brooke & Claire. They just might be crazy enough to win.
