Tonight I made some delicious Chicken Tortilla Soup - you know, the kind where you fry up strips of soft tortillas to put on top of the soup? Well, my soup was all done and as I took the cover off to ladle it into my bowl, I thought to myself "where am I going to set this cover?" Then I saw the empty pan of (still hot) oil from frying the tortillas sitting on the burner next to the soup pot. Being the genius that I am, I put the soup pot top (say that 5 times fast) on top of the oil pan, because the soup pot top fit the oil pan and I had no where else to put the top.
A few seconds later I hear a popping noise, and again, being the genius that I am, took the top off the oil pan. The condensation that had gathered on the soup pot top dripped into the hot oil, making horrific pops and spattering. I jumped back out of the way, giving a little yelp while doing so. For the next 10 seconds or so, hot oil/water was popping out of the pan with a remarkable force. It got all over the stove top, the counter next to the stove, and the floor (all of which I had just finished cleaning - of course).
Fortunately, I didn't get spattered on, but I was nervous for a minute that the kitchen was going to explode. The crazy thought even went through my mind that I should try to make it to the cupboard to get some baking powder (or is it baking soda?) to dump in the pan. How silly - there was no fire, the burner was off, and just about after I had this thought the popping stopped.
So, the lesson for the evening: putting a hot soup pot top on top of the hot oil pan is a dangerous (and messy) choice.
